United States, 15 June 2026 - Amad Diallo struck in the dying moments to hand Ivory Coast a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ensuring a perfect start for the African champions in a tightly contested encounter.
The Manchester United forward came off the bench to score in the 90th minute, finishing a swift attacking move to seal all three points after a match that looked destined to end in a stalemate.
The match began cautiously, with both sides prioritising structure over risk in a cagey first half.
Ecuador, unbeaten for a long stretch coming into the tournament, looked organised defensively and dangerous in transition, while Ivory Coast relied on quick combinations through Nicolas Pépé and teenage forward Yan Diomande.
Despite the intensity, clear scoring opportunities were limited in the opening stages, with both teams struggling to break through compact defensive lines.
The South Americans created the better chances as the match wore on, with John Yeboah and Alan Minda both striking the woodwork in a frustrating first half for Ecuador.
Their inability to finish chances would prove costly later on, as they controlled large spells of possession but failed to find a breakthrough.
Ivory Coast also came close through Elye Wahi, who was denied by the crossbar after a well-worked move involving Diomande, highlighting how evenly balanced the contest had become.
Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé turned to his bench in search of a decisive moment, introducing Amad Diallo in the second half.
The substitution immediately shifted the attacking rhythm of the game, with Ivory Coast becoming more direct and sharper in the final third.
As Ecuador pushed forward in search of a late winner themselves, space began to open up behind their defence.
In the 90th minute, Ivory Coast finally found the moment they had been waiting for.
Wilfried Singo burst down the right flank and delivered a precise pass into the box, where Amad Diallo timed his run perfectly before guiding a composed finish into the bottom corner.
