UK, August 05, 2026 - Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır is on the verge of joining La Liga side Celta Vigo after the two clubs reached an agreement over a season-long loan.
The Turkey international has been given permission by Manchester United to travel to Spain to complete his medical and finalize the transfer. The agreement includes a purchase option worth around €4 million, although the final fee could increase depending on performance-related clauses and appearances during the loan spell.
The move is expected to provide Bayındır with the regular first-team football he has struggled to find since arriving at Old Trafford.
Bayındır joined Manchester United from Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2023 to provide competition for André Onana.
Despite arriving with a strong reputation after several impressive seasons in Turkey, opportunities proved limited. He spent much of his United career as the club's second-choice goalkeeper, making appearances primarily in domestic cup competitions and whenever injuries or rotation required his inclusion.
Heading into the 2026-27 season, Bayındır's chances of becoming United's first-choice goalkeeper became even slimmer. The arrival of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens and the presence of experienced options in the squad meant the Turkish international was expected to seek regular football elsewhere.
Celta Vigo entered the transfer market looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of a season that includes both domestic and European competition.
Head coach Claudio Giráldez reportedly identified Bayındır as one of his priority targets because of his experience, commanding presence and excellent shot-stopping ability.
The Turkish international is expected to compete directly with Romanian goalkeeper Andrei Radu for the number one shirt rather than arrive as an automatic starter.
The agreement between the clubs is structured as an initial loan.
Included in the package is a purchase option of approximately €4 million, although reports indicate the final amount could change depending on appearance-related clauses achieved during the season.
Manchester United initially preferred a permanent transfer but ultimately accepted a loan arrangement that could still lead to a permanent move if Bayındır impresses in Spain.
