Algeria, 11 November 2025 — Algeria will host 110 Somali students for the 2026–2027 academic year under a new higher education program, part of a wider effort to strengthen bilateral ties.
The announcement was made during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Algiers, where he met Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune today.
President Tebboune described the initiative as “a step to harness available opportunities to intensify cooperation in higher education,” adding that additional scholarships will be offered in vocational, police, and defence training.
Officials from both countries also agreed on a four-year executive program (2026–2029) to implement initiatives under the higher education agreement.
The program is designed to manage scholarships, strengthen professional training, and expand cooperation in higher education.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud highlighted the broader significance of the visit, saying it will further cement the strong relations between the two countries.
“We have signed a series of important agreements that lay the foundation for an advanced stage of cooperation between our countries, reflecting our shared desire to translate our historic friendship into practical and organized collaboration that benefits our peoples and contributes to the development of our region and Africa,” the President said.
The higher education program is part of a wider set of agreements covering agriculture, energy, trade, security, and a visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports.
Officials said the initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to supporting regional educational development and Somalia’s efforts to expand international partnerships for its youth.
