Somalia, 21 January 2026 The militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed it seized control of Kudhaa Island in Somalia’s Lower Juba region, approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Kismayo, a key port city. According to the group's statement, the assault occurred early on Wednesday morning, following dawn prayers, targeting military positions associated with Jubbaland State-aligned forces.
In its claim, Al-Shabaab stated that after a brief battle, it captured three military posts on the island, causing significant casualties among opposing forces. The group also claimed to have seized prisoners, weapons, and supplies. However, specific details on casualties have not been provided.
