MOGADISHU (Dawan Africa) – July 31, 2026 – The commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, has said the United States has no plans to establish a military base in Somaliland and reaffirmed Washington’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In an interview published by the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu on Friday, Anderson was asked about repeated visits by AFRICOM officials to Somaliland and whether the United States intends to build a military base there.
“There is no plans to build a base in Somaliland,” Anderson said.
Asked whether the United States recognizes Somaliland as a separate state, Anderson restated the U.S. government’s position.

“US policy is and remains the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. That has not changed,” he said.
The remarks addressed questions surrounding AFRICOM’s activities in Somaliland during Anderson’s visit to Mogadishu.
