Addis Ababa (Dawan Africa) – The African Union Commission has welcomed the signing of the Revised Electoral Framework Agreement in Somalia, becoming the second major regional organization to endorse the deal after the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
In a statement issued on Thursday, AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf praised the agreement reached on 25 August between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and one faction of the Salvation Forum, the main opposition alliance. The deal paves the way for the election of Somalia’s next federal president and members of parliament.
Youssouf urged all signatories to ensure the scrupulous implementation of the agreement and called on Somali stakeholders to fully support the process. He stressed the importance of dialogue and consensus in resolving outstanding electoral issues.
The AU Chairperson also encouraged the international community to continue backing Somalia’s state-building and democratic processes, in line with priorities set by Somali institutions.
Reaffirming its role, the African Union pledged to remain a steadfast partner to Somalia and its people in their pursuit of peace, security, and stability.
