Somalia, 9 April 2026 Somalia’s defence authorities said on Thursday that an airstrike carried out in Mudug region killed approximately 70 Al-Shabaab militants, as the government intensifies counter-terrorism operations targering illegal armed groups.
The operation was conducted by the Somali National Army, supported by international partners. The airstrike targeted a militant gathering in the vicinity of Tawarmooge, located about 8 km south of Caad and 45 km north of Harardhere.
Officials said the group was planning attacks against civilians and security forces at the time of the operation.

Senior members of the group were among those killed, while between 90 and 95 others were wounded in the operation, the defence ministry said. Eight vehicles were also destroyed during the strike, including logistics vehicles carrying supplies.
Authorities reiterated that counterterrorism operations against militant groups remain ongoing across the country, as security forces continue efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and prevent future attacks.
