Somalia, 9 December 2025 – The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) said on Monday that 12 political parties have submitted their candidate lists for council elections across the 16 districts of the Banadir region.
Commission chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, speaking at a press briefing, urged political associations that have not yet submitted their lists to meet the December 10 deadline, saying: “We want the associations to complete their submissions, and those remaining must also meet the December 10 deadline.”
A total of 61 political parties are registered with the commission, though only a limited number have completed their submissions while others remain incomplete.
Parties that have submitted lists include Ramaas, Karaama, Union of Somalia Saab, Justice and Solidarity, Madalsan, Reconciliation and Development Towfiiq, Development & National Unity, People’s Unity, National Democratic, National Value, Somali Good Governance, and Somali Citizens.

The commission said the mentioned political parties have each submitted 378 candidates, with the final list scheduled to be announced on 15 December.
The Banadir District Council elections are scheduled to be held on 25 December as part of the country’s broader local electoral process.
