Kenya, May 25, 2026 - Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday mounted a fierce attack on President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of recklessly handling national security and exposing the country to instability ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at the party headquarters in Nairobi after returning from a trip to the United Kingdom, Gachagua demanded the immediate removal of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, saying he was unfit to oversee the country’s security docket.
In a strong statement, the former Deputy President said despite his political differences with President Ruto, he wanted the Head of State protected for the sake of national stability.
“Much as I don’t like William Ruto, much as I have a big problem with the way that he has mismanaged this country, I want William Ruto safe because it is important for the stability of this country,” Gachagua said.
“I want to have a chance to defeat William Ruto in an election next year. I want William Ruto safe. I also want the dignity of the Office of the President to be restored,” he added.
Gachagua’s remarks followed public concern over an alleged security lapse involving the President during a recent public engagement.
The DCP leader termed the incident “sheer recklessness” and questioned how an unidentified individual could reportedly get dangerously close to the Head of State.
“How do you explain to our children, how do you explain to foreigners that an unknown character can walk to where the President is and hold his neck and almost twist it?” he posed.
“This is sheer recklessness and it is dangerous for this country.”
Gachagua warned that any harm to the President would throw the country into turmoil.
“You cannot take your security recklessly and in a careless manner because if anything happens to you, there will be chaos and instability in this country,” he said.
“It is important that you are properly guarded. You must be safe and secure for the country to be politically stable. We don’t want instability ahead of the elections.”
The former Deputy President accused Murkomen of failing in his responsibilities and claimed the country’s security system had deteriorated under his leadership.
“You cannot let Murkomen stay another day in office. It is not right,” Gachagua declared.
“In other jurisdictions, the Interior CS and the Inspector General would have resigned. But what happened? Some changes were done.”
He urged President Ruto to allow professional security officers to handle his protection.

“I must tell William Ruto, please allow professionals to guard you. You are so exposed. It is now very clear for the whole country that there is a problem,” he said.
Gachagua further alleged that criminal gangs had infiltrated security operations under the current administration.
“Since Murkomen became the CS for Interior, this country is run by goons. You cannot tell the difference between goons and police officers. Goons ride in police vehicles,” he claimed.
The former Deputy President also accused the Interior CS of pursuing political interests instead of focusing on national security.
“This seat of Interior Ministry needs a person who is mature and who has no political ambitions because anyone who is ambitious would play around with security agencies and intelligence to further his political ambitions,” he said.
“We did agree with William Ruto sometime back that he takes up the role of Sports and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary. That is where he belongs. This Ministry is too serious for such a childish Minister.”
Gachagua broadened his criticism to the entire administration, accusing President Ruto of presiding over failures in key sectors of the economy.
“We are asking William Ruto. You have been unable to get anything right in this country,” he charged.
“You have failed in the economy, education, health, investments. You cannot get anything right including your own security as a person.”
The opposition leader warned that the country was heading in the wrong direction and called on Kenyans to pray for peace and stability.
“William Ruto you are staring at disaster,” Gachagua warned.
“We cannot have Murkomen as CS for Interior as we head towards the next elections.”
“I ask the people of Kenya to pray for this country.”
