MOGADISHU, 21 October 2026 — The Secretariat of the World Trade Organization has visited Mogadishu for the first time in history, giving new momentum to Somalia’s efforts to join the organisation.
The visit was part of a joint technical mission by the WTO and the International Trade Centre from 10 to 15 October, the federal government said. It described the mission as an important milestone in the country’s efforts to join the WTO and integrate into the multilateral trading system.
The mission was led by the Office of the Chief Trade Negotiator, with technical support from the WTO and ITC. It brought together senior government officials, relevant national institutions and international experts. Participants reviewed progress, resolved outstanding technical issues and set priorities for the next phase of negotiations.
According to a press release from the office, which falls under the Office of the President, the mission addressed questions raised by WTO members and reviewed key documentation. It also supported the preparation of Somalia’s market access offers on goods and services.
Somalia’s chief trade negotiator, Sadiq Haji Ibrahim, said the mission reflects Somalia’s commitment to WTO accession through sustained technical work, strong national coordination and international partnership.
