Kenya, 21 July 2026 - The road from Garissa to Isiolo has a rhythm of its own.
Long stretches of tarmac slice through an endless landscape of scattered shrubs and dusty plains that seem to stretch beyond the horizon. Occasionally, camels cross the road with effortless confidence. Goats graze beneath thorn bushes. Shepherds wave from a distance as the afternoon heat dances above the asphalt.
For anyone making the journey, surprises are few.
Or so I thought.
Somewhere near Banane, a small settlement in Garissa County, something unusual caught my eye.
Far beyond the roadside fence, dozens of towering birds moved gracefully across an enclosed compound. Their long necks rose above the bushes like sentinels watching over the land. At first glance, I assumed they were wild ostriches that had wandered together from the surrounding plains.
But there were simply too many of them.
Curiosity won.
Our vehicle slowed before turning into the compound.
What lay inside was unlike anything I had expected.
More than fifty ostriches wandered calmly across a relatively small piece of land, pecking at vegetation, occasionally stretching their enormous wings or sprinting across the enclosure with astonishing speed. Their movements were elegant, almost choreographed, yet entirely natural.
The birds appeared perfectly at home.
Standing quietly nearby was Samuel Mutembei, the caretaker responsible for looking after the growing flock.
What seemed extraordinary to me barely registered among local residents.
For them, ostriches are simply part of everyday life.
Samuel has spent enough time with the birds to understand their habits better than most wildlife enthusiasts.
Watching one of the larger birds wander toward the fence, he smiles.
"People from outside are always surprised," he says.
"But here, seeing ostriches is normal. We have wild ones all over this area."
The farm currently keeps 56 ostriches, many of which are now nearly two years old.
To the untrained eye, they appear fully grown.
Samuel laughs when I ask whether they are adults.
"They look big, but they are still babies."
Then comes the revelation that perfectly captures the uniqueness of northern Kenya.
Unlike cattle, goats or sheep, these ostriches have an unusual relationship with their wild cousins.
"Sometimes they leave the farm and join the wild ostriches," Samuel explains.
"After some time they come back."
The reverse also happens.
"Wild ostriches sometimes visit here. They stay for a while, but eventually they leave because they are used to living freely."
It is a relationship that blurs the line between wildlife conservation and commercial farming.
Few places in Kenya offer such a natural interaction.
The compound itself reflects northern Kenya's resilience.
Unlike intensive commercial farms that rely on irrigation systems and expensive infrastructure, this farm works largely with nature.
Rainfall determines the planting seasons.
The farm grows maize, lentils and watermelon whenever the rains allow.
Everything depends on the climate.
It is an approach born from necessity.
Northern Kenya has long been associated with pastoralism. Camels, goats, sheep, and cattle.
These animals have shaped livelihoods for generations.
Ostriches rarely feature in conversations about farming. Yet standing inside the enclosure, another question begins to emerge. What if they should?
Across Kenya, ostriches are often viewed as tourist attractions. Families encounter them during weekend visits to wildlife parks, children feed them, visitors take photographs, but few leave thinking about business, yet globally, ostriches represent one of the most valuable alternative livestock industries.
Unlike conventional livestock, an ostrich generates multiple income streams from a single bird.
Its meat is among the healthiest forms of red meat available, prized for being low in cholesterol, low in fat and rich in protein.
Its skin produces one of the world's most luxurious leathers, used by premium fashion houses to manufacture handbags, belts, shoes and wallets.
Its feathers continue to supply fashion, cleaning products and traditional ceremonial markets.
Even its enormous eggs create value. A single egg can feed an entire family, while decorative shells are transformed into artwork, lighting fixtures and souvenirs. Every single part of the bird carries commercial potential.
Yet despite these opportunities, ostrich farming remains one of Kenya's least understood agricultural enterprises.
The irony is impossible to ignore.
Kenya possesses one of Africa's largest wild ostrich populations.
From Kajiado to Samburu.
From Isiolo to Turkana.
From Garissa to Wajir.
The birds roam freely across landscapes that millions of tourists travel thousands of kilometres to witness.
Yet very few Kenyans have considered that the same bird could become an engine of rural enterprise.
Standing quietly beside the enclosure, Samuel does not speak in the language of markets or investment returns.
His relationship with the birds is much simpler.
"I enjoy taking care of them," he says.
"Every day you learn something new about them."
There is genuine affection in his voice.
He points toward a small group feeding together.
"Each one behaves differently."
For Samuel, the ostriches are more than livestock. They have become companions, but for Kenya, however, they may represent something much bigger, an industry whose time has finally arrived.
From the outside, the Banane farm looks modest.
There are no elaborate buildings. No massive feed silos. No sophisticated machinery humming in the background.
Just fenced paddocks, open grazing space and dozens of towering birds moving calmly across the landscape.
Yet beneath that simplicity lies one of agriculture's most profitable business models.
Unlike cattle, where a farmer often depends almost entirely on meat or milk, an ostrich offers multiple products from a single bird, making it one of the few livestock enterprises where virtually nothing goes to waste.
It is a business model that economists describe as value maximization, earning several streams of income from one investment.
For farmers searching for climate-smart enterprises, few animals compare.
At first glance, comparing an ostrich with a cow seems almost absurd.
Cattle dominate Kenya's livestock economy, where an entire communities measure wealth through the number of cows they own.
But financially, ostriches tell a different story.
A mature ostrich can produce between 45 and 50 kilograms of premium red meat, prized internationally for its low fat and low cholesterol content.
Health-conscious consumers increasingly regard ostrich meat as a healthier alternative to beef because it contains less saturated fat while maintaining high protein levels.
In premium markets, ostrich meat commands significantly higher prices than ordinary beef.
Then comes the leather.
Unlike ordinary hides, ostrich leather is instantly recognizable through its distinctive feather follicles, the characteristic "goose bump" texture that luxury brands around the world value for handbags, belts, shoes, jackets and wallets.
Fashion houses in Europe and Asia pay premium prices for properly processed ostrich skins because of their durability and rarity.
The feathers provide another revenue stream.
Although no longer as dominant as they were during the early twentieth century, ostrich feathers remain valuable in industrial cleaning equipment, ceremonial regalia, interior décor and specialised fashion accessories.
Even the eggs generate income. One ostrich egg weighs the equivalent of approximately two dozen chicken eggs and can comfortably feed an entire family.
When emptied carefully, the shells become decorative pieces, lamps, jewellery and tourist souvenirs.
Unlike cattle, where value often ends at slaughter, ostriches continue creating economic opportunities through nearly every part of the animal.
Despite these opportunities, Kenya's ostrich industry remains surprisingly small. Most Kenyans encounter ostriches only during visits to wildlife parks or tourist attractions, but few imagine them standing alongside dairy cows, poultry or goats as commercial livestock, yet the foundations already exist.
Licensed breeding farms operate in parts of Kajiado, Kitengela and other regions.
The market exists. The knowledge exists. The demand exists but what remains limited is awareness, and that reality becomes even more striking in northern Kenya.
Conventional agriculture struggles across much of northern Kenya due to erratic rainfall, recurring drought, poor soils in some places and even high temperatures.
For decades these conditions have limited farming opportunities but they happen to favour ostriches, the birds evolved to survive harsh, semi-arid environments.
Unlike many livestock species, they tolerate heat exceptionally well, they require relatively modest amounts of water compared to cattle, their powerful legs enable them to cover large distances naturally, while their digestive systems efficiently utilize vegetation that many domestic animals ignore.

Climate scientists increasingly argue that future agriculture must focus on resilient livestock capable of surviving changing weather patterns and few animals embody that principle better than the ostrich.
For all its promise, ostrich farming is not as simple as buying a few birds and building a fence.
Unlike chickens or goats, ostriches remain protected wildlife under Kenyan law.
Anyone wishing to rear them commercially must first obtain authorization from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
The licensing process exists for good reason, and this ie because Kenya considers ostriches part of its natural heritage, hence, ommercial farming must therefore balance economic opportunity with wildlife conservation.
Prospective farmers are required to demonstrate adequate land, secure fencing, appropriate housing, veterinary management plans and the capacity to care for the birds responsibly.
Making the objective is clear, that commercial farming should strengthen conservation rather than undermine it.
By encouraging licensed breeding, authorities hope to reduce illegal capture from the wild while creating sustainable economic opportunities for communities.
Around the world, wildlife conservation has gradually evolved beyond strict protection.
Increasingly, governments recognize that local communities are more likely to conserve wildlife when they derive tangible economic benefits from it.
Kenya has embraced elements of that philosophy through regulated wildlife utilisation.
Instead of viewing wildlife solely as something to preserve inside national parks, conservation policy increasingly acknowledges the role that private landowners and communities can play in protecting biodiversity while generating livelihoods.
Licensed ostrich farming fits within that broader vision.
Every bird successfully bred on a commercial farm potentially reduces pressure on wild populations by creating employment, supporting veterinary services, stimulating tourism and encouraging habitat preservation.
Most importantly, it gives communities a financial reason to value living wildlife.
Samuel is not an economist, he does not speak about value chains, export markets or return on investment but his optimism comes from observation.
Every morning he watches the birds feed, he sees how quickly they grow, he notices visitors stopping simply to admire them.
He watches wild ostriches occasionally wander close to the fence before disappearing back into the plains.
To him, these birds belong here, and perhaps that is precisely what makes Banane special. The farm does not feel like an imported business model, but an enterprise that has grown naturally from the landscape itself, and perhaps that is the greatest lesson hidden behind its fences.
Sometimes the industries capable of transforming rural economies are not introduced from elsewhere. Sometimes they have been running across our landscapes all along.
The idea of keeping more than 50 ostriches inside a fenced compound may sound unusual to many Kenyans, but in Banane it barely raises an eyebrow.
Wild ostriches have roamed the arid plains of northern Kenya for generations. They wander across grazing fields, occasionally crossing roads before disappearing into the horizon. To many residents, they are simply another part of the landscape.
That familiarity is precisely what makes the commercial opportunity so easy to overlook.
While communities continue to see ostriches as ordinary wildlife, entrepreneurs elsewhere have quietly turned the giant birds into one of Africa's highest-value livestock enterprises, generating income from premium meat, luxury leather, feathers, eggs and tourism.
For Samuel Mutembei, who cares for the birds every day, the attraction goes beyond money.
"Taking care of them is exciting," he says, watching a group of young birds gather near a feeding area.
"Every day you learn something different about them. They each have their own behaviour and they recognize the people who look after them."
Although the ostriches occasionally leave the farm and mingle with their wild relatives before returning, Mutembei says they have adapted remarkably well to captivity.
"Sometimes the wild ostriches come here too, but they don't stay for long because they are used to living freely. Ours know this place is home."
That relationship between domesticated and wild birds illustrates something rarely discussed in Kenya's livestock sector, ostriches are naturally suited to the dry ecosystems where many traditional farming activities struggle.
Unlike dairy cattle, they require relatively little water, tolerate high temperatures and thrive in semi-arid environments where drought frequently devastates conventional livestock production.

It is information.
Most residents already understand how ostriches survive in harsh environments because they have lived alongside them for decades.
What remains largely unknown is their commercial value.
Few communities realise that a single licensed ostrich enterprise can generate income from multiple products simultaneously, creating opportunities far beyond meat production.
That knowledge gap explains why many northern counties continue investing almost exclusively in cattle, goats and camels despite possessing natural conditions perfectly suited for ostrich farming.
Development experts increasingly argue that livelihood diversification will become essential as prolonged droughts continue affecting pastoral communities.
Adding climate-resilient enterprises such as ostrich farming could reduce household vulnerability while creating new employment opportunities, particularly for young people.
The ostriches are only one piece of the story.

"I enjoy working with them every day, You learn something new about them all the time." He says

They are hardy birds, well suited to the arid conditions of northern Kenya.
That resilience is one reason experts believe ostrich farming could become an important climate-smart agricultural enterprise for Kenya's drylands.
Although ostriches are commonly associated with tourism and wildlife parks, commercial ostrich farming has quietly evolved into a niche industry with enormous economic potential.
Retail prices in Kenya can reach as high as Sh5,000 per kilogram in specialised markets, although wholesale prices are considerably lower.
One ostrich egg weighs between 1.2 and 1.8 kilograms, equivalent to roughly 24 chicken eggs, and can feed an entire family.
Established farms around Nairobi and other tourism circuits earn additional income from guided tours, educational visits, photography experiences and wildlife encounters.
Agritourism has therefore become an increasingly important component of the ostrich business model, particularly for farms located near major highways or tourism destinations.
Yet starting an ostrich farm in Kenya is not as simple as buying chicks and building a fence.

Despite these costs, advocates argue that the long lifespan and multiple revenue streams allow investors to recover their capital over time.

If a single bird can produce premium meat, world-class leather, decorative feathers, valuable eggs and even attract paying tourists, why are so few Kenyans investing in ostrich farming?
The answer is more complicated than many people imagine.
Unlike poultry, dairy or goat farming, ostrich farming has never received the same institutional support from government, financial institutions or agricultural extension services.
Most farmers simply do not know enough about it.
Those who do often struggle to access breeding stock, veterinary expertise and reliable markets.
The result is an industry with enormous potential but very few players.
According to wildlife and agricultural experts, Kenya possesses nearly every natural advantage required to build a globally competitive ostrich industry.
The country has indigenous ostrich species, vast semi-arid lands naturally suited to the birds, growing domestic tourism, It enjoys proximity to export markets in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, Yet much of this potential remains untapped.
Unlike broiler chickens that mature within weeks, ostriches require patience.
A chick takes nearly two years before reaching full maturity, and farmers must therefore think long-term, they invest today knowing returns may only begin flowing much later and that waiting period discourages many first-time investors.
The initial costs are equally intimidating.
A farmer must invest in secure fencing, incubation facilities or breeding stock, veterinary care and adequate grazing space.
Because ostriches remain protected wildlife, prospective farmers must also comply with Kenya Wildlife Service licensing requirements before acquiring birds.
Unlike traditional livestock, shortcuts are not an option.
Every bird must be legally acquired and properly documented.
Perhaps the biggest misconception is that ostriches are easy to rear simply because they survive in the wild.
The reality is very different.
Commercial ostrich farming is highly technical.
Successful breeding depends on carefully managed incubation.
Naturally, as many as 60% of ostrich eggs may fail to hatch, making commercial incubators almost indispensable for profitable production.
Even after hatching, the first few months remain critical.
Industry studies show that chick mortality can reach 40% if nutrition, warmth and biosecurity are poorly managed.
Young birds require specialised feeds rich in protein, minerals and vitamins to support their rapid growth.
Veterinary monitoring becomes essential.
It is this technical knowledge, not necessarily the birds themselves—that often separates successful farms from failed investments.
If Kenya is searching for a blueprint, it need not look far. South Africa has spent decades building one of the world's most successful ostrich industries they have seen entire towns have develope around ostrich production.
Thousands of jobs have been created through meat processing, leather manufacturing, tourism and exports.
The country no longer views ostriches simply as wildlife, but as part of an integrated agricultural value chain that supports farmers, processors, transporters, exporters, fashion manufacturers and tourism operators.
Kenya possesses similar climatic conditions, indigenous ostrich populations, an established leather sector, as well as growing tourism.
What remains missing is scale.
Ironically, the regions often viewed as economically disadvantaged could become the biggest winners. Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, and Kajiado.
These counties already possess one resource that money cannot buy.
The environment.
Unlike high-rainfall regions where farmers constantly battle mud, parasites and humidity, northern Kenya offers dry conditions that naturally favour ostrich production.
Large expanses of open land allow the birds to exercise naturally.
The climate closely resembles the ecosystems where wild ostriches have thrived for centuries.
As climate change continues making conventional livestock production increasingly unpredictable, climate-resilient enterprises such as ostrich farming may become more attractive.
Development economists increasingly argue that diversification, not dependence on a single livestock species, will define the future of pastoral economies.
For decades, livestock wealth in northern Kenya has largely meant cattle, goats, sheep and camels.
These animals remain culturally significant and economically important.
But repeated droughts continue exposing the risks of relying on a limited number of livestock systems.
Entire herds can disappear within months during prolonged dry seasons.
And instead of depending on one product, farmers can potentially earn from breeding stock, eggs, feathers, leather, tourism and processed meat.
That creates greater resilience against market fluctuations.
Back at the farm, the afternoon sun begins to soften.
A gentle wind sweeps across the compound as the ostriches drift towards their feeding area. Nothing about the scene suggests revolution.
There are no investors in suits. No billion-shilling factories. No massive industrial complexes.
Just a caretaker, with 56 birds.
And a vision that perhaps even its owners have not fully realised.
Samuel watches them quietly.
"People come here because they are surprised," he says.
"But after spending time with them, they understand why we enjoy keeping them."
Perhaps that is the real story hidden in Banane.
Not simply that someone chose to rear ostriches.
But that, in one quiet corner of Garissa County, lies a glimpse of what northern Kenya's future could become.
A future where wildlife and commerce no longer compete.
Where conservation creates livelihoods.
Where climate resilience meets entrepreneurship.
Where the birds that have always belonged to these dry plains become the foundation of a new rural economy.
As our vehicle pulls away from the farm, the ostriches gradually disappear behind the thorn trees, blending once again into the landscape where wild and domesticated birds have coexisted for generations.
It is easy to dismiss the Banane farm as an isolated curiosity.
Yet doing so would miss the bigger picture.
Across Africa, countries are searching for industries capable of creating jobs, strengthening climate resilience and adding value to natural resources.
Kenya may not need to look very far.
Sometimes opportunity is not discovered underground like minerals.
Sometimes it does not arrive in shipping containers or Silicon Valley innovations.
Sometimes it is already running across our plains at 70 kilometres per hour.
For decades, Kenyans have admired ostriches as symbols of the wild.
Perhaps the time has come to see them differently, not only as icons of the savannah, but as partners in building a more diversified, resilient and prosperous rural economy.
