United Kingdom, May 24, 2026 - Heartbreak struck for West Ham United on the final day of the Premier League season as the Hammers were officially relegated despite securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Leeds United.
At the same time, Tottenham Hotspur narrowly avoided what would have been one of the most shocking relegations in modern Premier League history after grinding out a tense 1-0 win against Everton F.C.
West Ham entered the final day knowing survival was no longer fully in their hands.
The Hammers needed two things:
- A victory over Leeds
- Tottenham to lose against Everton
Manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s side delivered their part of the mission in convincing fashion at the London Stadium. Goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen, and Callum Wilson sealed an emphatic win in front of emotional home supporters.
However, news filtering through from North London slowly crushed hopes of survival.
Once João Palhinha gave Spurs the lead against Everton, West Ham’s fate was effectively sealed. Despite late pressure from Everton, Tottenham held on nervously to confirm Premier League survival.
For Tottenham, the final whistle brought relief more than celebration.
A club that started the season with ambitions of European qualification instead found itself fighting for survival until the very last day. Roberto De Zerbi, appointed during the final stretch of the campaign, managed to guide Spurs to safety after weeks of pressure and instability.
Palhinha’s first-half strike proved enough in a tense encounter where every clearance in stoppage time was cheered like a goal by anxious Spurs supporters.
Tottenham eventually finished 17th with 41 points, only two points above West Ham.
The relegation marks a dramatic collapse for West Ham.

Just three years ago, the club lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy and appeared to be building toward long-term European competitiveness under David Moyes. Since then, instability behind the scenes, poor recruitment decisions, managerial changes, and inconsistent performances gradually dragged the club into crisis.
The Hammers reportedly endured:
- Multiple managerial changes in a short period
- Poor transfer investments
- Dressing-room instability
- Fan protests against ownership
- Heavy financial losses
Their relegation is especially painful considering they finished with 39 points, one of the highest totals for a relegated Premier League side in recent history.
The atmosphere at the London Stadium was emotional throughout the match.
Although supporters applauded the players’ effort, frustration toward the club hierarchy was evident. Many fans blamed years of poor planning and questionable football decisions for the club’s downfall.
Reports suggest key players including Jarrod Bowen could now attract major transfer interest as West Ham prepare for life in the Championship.
The 2025/26 Premier League season will be remembered for one of the most dramatic relegation fights in recent years.
At different moments during the campaign:
- Spurs looked certain to go down
- West Ham briefly climbed out of danger
- Leeds and Nottingham Forest were dragged into the battle
- Final-day survival permutations changed almost weekly.
In the end, Tottenham survived while West Ham fell.
And one of England’s biggest clubs now faces the difficult task of rebuilding in the Championship after 14 consecutive seasons in the Premier League.
