Kenya, August 25, 2026 - Residents in areas served by four water service providers in the Coast region will face water supply interruptions after the agency disconnected the companies over outstanding water bills.
The Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA) said on Tuesday that the water companies have failed to settle 100% of their water bills as required, prompting the agency to take action.
The companies include Tavevo Water and Sewerage Company, Kwale Water and Sewerage Company (KWAWASCO), Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO), and Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO), which have been disconnected.
The agency apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by the interruption but did not say when water supply would be restored.
“The disconnection has been undertaken due to outstanding water bills and failure by the respective Water Service Providers to settle 100% of their water bills as required. We regret any inconvenience caused,” the company confirmed.
The announcement comes even after the agency continues to face backlash from leaders in the regions for what they term as reluctance to solve the worsening water crisis.
In February, four county chiefs from the region called for the immediate disbandment of the agency, claiming that the staff of the board are incompetent to execute their duties as required.
The four include Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung'aro, Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime, and Kwale Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo.
Despite repeated complaints about the deteriorating condition of water infrastructure in the region, and even though counties have allocated funds for repairs, the board has remained slow to resolve the crisis, according to the governors.
"We have also raised these issues with the coastal waters, and they have always said that they will repair, but nothing is being done. Now the drought that we have has made the situation worse, and our people are suffering," Governor Mung'aro said.
"As counties, we are suffering because we have debts and despite giving funds for the repair of pipes so that our people may get water, the board is still reluctant to do anything," Governor Abdulswamad said.
