Kenya, April 20,2026 - Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale clashed over the treatment of the Deputy President by both the current and former administrations.
Speaking in Mandera during President William Ruto’s visit, Duale said that President Uhuru Kenyatta mistreated, disrespected, and humiliated William Ruto as Deputy President.
However, Gachagua, speaking in Murang’a in defence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, warned Duale against dragging the retired President into current political debates.
He said President Uhuru Kenyatta never paid members of Parliament to impeach William Ruto as Deputy President or sent goons and police to beat and teargas the DP, but allowed him to serve his term.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta never stopped William Ruto from moving around the country; he was everywhere, including in Mount Kenya every week, and President Uhuru never stopped him,” he said.
The former Deputy President claimed President William Ruto has done the exact opposite by not only humiliating and persecuting his deputy but also paying MPs to remove him from office.
“He has followed him to his home and organised police and goons to beat him up every weekend and even gone after his children, making sure that they are evicted from his business,” he said.
He warned Duale that the former President’s record is clean with the people of Kenya.
But in a quick rejoinder, Duale told him off, saying the only reason President Kenyatta did not impeach Ruto as Deputy President was that he didn’t have the numbers in Parliament.
More from Kenya
The vocal CS said President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i not only disrespected President William Ruto but also persecuted him.
“You were also arrested in front of your children, they removed your clothes. Now because you are speaking your tribal language, you don’t want to mention that,” said Duale while speaking in Wajir.
On impeaching Ruto from the Deputy President’s office, Duale claimed that Uhuru Kenyatta didn’t have the numbers to push for an impeachment motion against Ruto.
“I was the leader of 145 members, you (Gachagua) included, that made Uhuru not impeach William Ruto. He tried to impeach, but Ruto was a popular leader with the people of Kenya,” he added.
Duale said even when Uhuru made a handshake with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, he could not raise the required numbers in Parliament.
The CS said during the impeachment motion against Rigathi Gachagua, he had no one to support him, not even his members of Parliament from Mathira constituency.
