Kenya, April 26, 2026 - ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga has made it clear that any future political pact with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will be built on equal footing, with the party demanding a 50-50 share in power.
Speaking during an ODM youth convention in Kilifi, Wanga said the party would not enter negotiations as a junior partner, emphasising that its political strength must be reflected in any arrangement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“When we sit at the table, it will be as equals. And when positions are shared, it will be 50-50,” she said.
In a strong hint at ODM’s internal thinking, Wanga suggested that if UDA retains the presidency in such a deal, ODM would push to produce the Deputy President, pointing to Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho as a possible candidate.
“If they produce a president, we will produce a deputy… and Joho has what it takes,” she added.
Her remarks come amid ongoing engagement between ODM and UDA following the formation of a joint committee tasked with coordinating governance and easing political tensions. The framework has also sparked early discussions around electoral strategies, including possible agreements to avoid competing in certain regions.

While the idea of a joint ticket is still taking shape, Wanga’s comments signal that ODM is already positioning itself firmly within any future coalition—keen to secure influence at the highest level.
At the same event, she also took aim at opposition figures, accusing them of attempting to draw political mileage from the legacy of the late Raila Odinga.
“Leave Baba alone… do not mention him or disrespect him,” she said.
Wanga further dismissed recent opposition tours at the Coast, insisting ODM remains firmly rooted in the region and will only align with partners who share its values.
