ASMARA, 11 October 2026 The U.S. Embassy in Asmara has issued a security alert urging American citizens in Eritrea to exercise increased caution as fighting continues in northern Ethiopia near the Eritrean border.
In an alert dated 9 October, the embassy cited travel restrictions, landmines, the risk of wrongful detention and limitations on consular assistance as security concerns for U.S. citizens in the country.
The embassy said its staff were unable to travel more than 25 km (15 miles) from central Asmara, limiting their ability to assist American citizens outside the capital.
It urged citizens to prepare evacuation plans that did not depend on U.S. government assistance, keep travel documents up to date, carry identification and review their personal safety arrangements. Americans were also advised to follow local news and register with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive security alerts.

The embassy also warned dual U.S.-Eritrean citizens that Eritrea does not recognise dual nationality in the same way as the United States. They may be treated solely as Eritrean citizens and could face obligations including taxation and national service, as well as restrictions on leaving the country. The embassy said its ability to assist them could be limited.
The warning comes amid renewed fighting in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region and growing tensions between Addis Ababa and Asmara.
Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of sending troops across the border and supporting armed groups fighting the federal government. Eritrea has denied the allegations and accused Ethiopia of using them to justify possible aggression.
