Somalia, 2 July 2026 – The United States congratulated Somalia on its 66th Independence and Unity Day and reaffirmed commitment to peace and stability.
In a statement on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States will continue working closely with Somalia in fighting terrorism and corruption.
“The United States stands with the Somali people in their fight against terrorism, corruption, and in their efforts to build a more prosperous future,” Rubio said.
He said Washington looked forward to working with Somalia in the year ahead to advance peace.
The message comes as Somalia continues military operations against Al-Shabaab, with support from international partners including the United States. Washington has long backed Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts, while also urging stronger governance and accountability as part of wider stabilisation efforts.

Rubio’s reference to corruption highlighted Washington’s broader view that Somalia’s stability depends not only on security operations, but also on stronger institutions, improved public accountability and reforms that can support long-term development.
The statement also reflects continued diplomatic engagement between Somalia and the United States, which has supported Somalia’s state-building, security and humanitarian priorities as the country works to strengthen federal institutions.
The statement did not announce new funding or military assistance or a fresh diplomatic initiative, but it reaffirmed Washington’s support for Somalia’s peace and stability agenda.
Somalia marked its 66th Independence and Unity Day anniversary July 1, commemorating independence and the union of the former Italian-administered south and British Somaliland in 1960.
