Somalia, 12 July 2026 - The United States has welcomed Somalia's swift response after members of the Somali Security Forces were filmed desecrating the American flag, saying those responsible must be held accountable to protect the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Somalia condemned the incident, describing it as an act that undermines bilateral relations, while commending the Federal Government for moving quickly to investigate and detain those involved.
"The United States has provided billions of taxpayer dollars in assistance to Somalia. Most notably, the good faith of the American people has long supported military action against terrorist organisations which threaten the United States and, most directly, target the Somali people," the Embassy said.
The Embassy acknowledged the government's immediate response following the circulation of the viral video.
"The US Embassy appreciates the Federal Government of Somalia's quick response and decisive actions following a video of individuals in the Somali Security Forces desecrating the American flag."
It added that those behind the incident should face consequences.
"Malfeasant actors who seek to tarnish Somalia's relationship with the United States harm the Somali people and must continue to be held accountable."
The controversy erupted after footage circulated online showing individuals believed to be members of the Somali Security Forces desecrating the US flag, prompting condemnation from both Washington and Mogadishu.
On Friday, Somalia's Ministry of Defence distanced itself from the incident, describing the actions as unacceptable and contrary to the values and professionalism expected of the Somali National Army.

"The individuals concerned have been detained, and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine appropriate disciplinary and legal action," the Ministry said.
The Ministry stressed that the actions captured in the video did not reflect the position of the Federal Government or the country's security forces.
It also reaffirmed Somalia's commitment to its longstanding security partnership with the United States, which has played a central role in supporting the country's fight against the Al-Shabaab and Islamic State (ISIS) militant groups.
"Our cooperation has been instrumental in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS and in strengthening Somalia's security institutions," the Ministry said.
"The Ministry of Defence reaffirms its respect for the people and flag of the United States and for the enduring partnership between our two nations."
The United States has been one of Somalia's key security and development partners for years, providing billions of dollars in assistance, including military support, humanitarian aid and capacity-building programmes aimed at helping the Horn of Africa nation combat terrorism and strengthen state institutions.
