Mogadishu, 25 August 2026 A U.N. mission has concluded its support programme for Somalia's justice institutions and prison services, the justice Ministry said on Tuesday.
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Hassan Maallin Mahmoud thanked the United Nations and its partners at a closing event attended by federal and state officials, U.N. representatives and justice and corrections officials.
United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) was established in 2024 under Security Council Resolution 2753, replacing United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), to support Somalia's transition and transfer responsibilities to Somali authorities. Its mandate included strengthening justice institutions, improving prison services and supporting human rights protections.

Mahmoud said the end of UNTMIS support marks an important stage for Somali institutions and reaffirmed the government's commitment to continuing justice reforms.
He said knowledge and capacity developed during the mission would provide a foundation for further improvements.
