USA, 13 November 2025- The United Nations and the African Union have set an expanded cooperation roadmap for 2026 after renewing their strategic partnership during the 9th annual conference held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The meeting was co-chaired by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
Both sides affirmed that their partnership constitutes a cornerstone of the international system founded on peace and security, especially amid rising armed conflicts, worsening humanitarian crises, and declining respect for international law.
Both officials emphasized the importance of political solutions, preventive diplomacy, and dialogue as key tools for addressing current crises.
The conference reviewed progress made in implementing the three cooperation frameworks between the two organizations, while reaffirming support for African-led efforts in Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Libya, the Great Lakes region, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa.
The meeting also called for sustainable and predictable funding for African Union-led peace support operations, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2719 (2023), stressing the need to accelerate the implementation of the joint roadmap between both parties.
Discussions further covered enhanced cooperation on digital transformation, climate action, and inclusive development, with praise for initiatives such as Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy, the “AI for Africa” Initiative, and the outcomes of the second Africa Climate Summit.
Leaders highlighted the pivotal role of women and youth in peacebuilding and sustainable development, welcoming the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls as a significant institutional milestone.
The two sides concluded by agreeing to hold the 10th annual conference in Addis Ababa in 2026, to continue strengthening their strategic partnership in support of Africa and the wider international community.
