Somalia – 18 September 2025 – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Wednesday issued a flood alert in Jowhar following an unprecedented rise in water levels in Shabelle River.
Quoting the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the Hirshabelle State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA said the river’s water level has risen to 5.40 meters, just 10 centimeters below the bank-full level of 5.50 meters.
This sharp increase has occurred despite dry conditions across both Somali and Ethiopian catchments—an unusual development that has raised concerns among disaster response agencies.
The alert, effective until 22 September 2025, warns of possible riverbank breaches and localized flooding, threatening to damage homes, farmland, and infrastructure.
There are also growing fears of water contamination that could trigger health risks in already vulnerable communities.
Authorities recommend reinforcing weak embankments with sandbags or soil, avoiding riverbank cuts for irrigation, and preparing evacuation routes.
Communities living near the river are urged to remain vigilant and safeguard essential items, livestock, and documents.
