MOGADISHU (Dawan) – 18 August 2026 – Somalia’s Ministry of Defence said two young livestock herders killed Hassan Alasow Rage, also known as ‘Hassan Xusuleey’, in Runirgood district of Middle Shabelle region on August 17.
According to the ministry, the two young men seized an AK-47 rifle and ammunition carried by the commander after the killing.
Rage, aged 50, born in Runirgood district, was identified by the ministry as Al Shabaab’s transport commander for Middle Shabelle region. The ministry also said he previously served as the group’s official responsible for collecting “Zakat” in Runirgood district.

The ministry accused Hassan Xusuleey of being involved in activities including the seizure of property and livestock, imposing restrictions on communities and disrupting civilian movement, saying his actions had contributed to displacement in the area.
The Defence Ministry praised the actions of the two young herders, saying the incident reflects the role Somali communities are playing in efforts against Al-Shabaab.
