Kenya, 12 October 2026 - A court in Meru County on Monday ordered two police constables, accused of sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl, to remain in custody for 14 days while detectives continue with investigations.
Githongo Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Nafuna Sarapai allowed investigators time to conclude their probe before the matter advances.
The suspects, Police Constables Nicholas Njagi and James Mutabari, are based at Kinjo Police Patrol Base in Imenti Central.
The court heard that the suspects committed the alleged offence on 9 October 2026 in Kinjo village.
A report was made to the police, after which officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) began preliminary inquiries.
The victim, the court heard, was medically examined at a hospital in Meru, leading to the arrest of the two constables.

Detectives later visited the scene, gathered exhibits and held an identification parade on 11 October 2026, during which the child is said to have identified the pair.
The case is due to be mentioned again on 26 October 2026 for further directions, which may include the taking of pleas.
For now, the two constables remain suspects until when they will be charged formally and if charges are proved beyond reasonable doubt, they will be convicted.
If found not guilty, they will be set free.
