Ankara, 5 September 2026 Turkey has confirmed that it provided support to Somali authorities during efforts to secure the release of the cargo ship MV LUTUF, which was hijacked off Somalia’s coast, the Turkish Defence Ministry said on Thursday.
The ministry said, in coordination with Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, it provided the necessary support to Somali authorities during the incident.
According to the ministry, an operation carried out by Somali authorities led to the pirates abandoning the vessel, allowing the ship to be secured.

The statement did not provide further details on the nature or extent of Turkey’s support to the Somali authorities.
Somalia has said the vessel was successfully freed following efforts by its authorities, with Turkish support.
The incident comes as Turkey and Somalia deepen their security cooperation, including efforts to strengthen Somalia’s capacity to combat piracy and protect its territorial waters.
