HARGEISA, 8 October 2026 – Somaliland’s Ministry of Agricultural Development on Wednesday warned people living near seasonal riverbeds of possible flooding from heavy rain expected this week.
The warning followed the ministry’s weather forecasting department’s weekly forecast for Oct. 7 to 13, which shows many parts of Somaliland can expect moderate to heavy rain.
The heaviest rain is expected in Borama, Gabiley, Hargeisa, Sheikh and Burao. Very heavy rainfall, estimated at 150 to 250 millimetres, is expected in southern Borama, central Gabiley, central and southwestern Hargeisa, southeastern Sheikh and northern Burao, according to the ministry.
“The forecast indicates that rainfall this week will be well above normal levels,” the ministry said. It added that the report needs to reach the public and all branches of government.

The ministry urged people living near seasonal rivers to protect themselves from possible flooding.
It also told urban communities and local governments that the rain could damage roads and called on them to monitor the situation closely to prevent harm.
The ministry said the expected rain is an opportunity for production and advised farmers to take advantage of it and plant crops.
According to the ministry, the rain could increase crop production and water availability. Livestock herders could also benefit from pasture and fodder growth.
