HARGEISA, 3 October 2026 — Somaliland has responded to remarks made by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in an interview with Al Jazeera, reaffirming its position on independence and foreign relations, according to a statement issued by Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry said Somalia had no authority to determine Somaliland’s diplomatic relations or speak on behalf of its people.
The statement said Somaliland gained independence on 26 June 1960, before Somalia’s independence on 1 July 1960, and argued that its withdrawal from the union on 18 May 1991 reaffirmed its statehood.
Somaliland also said it had established government institutions, held elections and carried out peaceful transfers of power since 1991. The ministry added that Somalia’s political and security situation did not alter Somaliland’s position on its independence.
