Hargeisa (Dawan Africa) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” has assured that Ethiopian citizens residing in Somaliland are to be fully protected, warning that any harm against them will not be tolerated.
Addressing the press on Sunday, President Irro said security forces have been instructed to safeguard all foreign nationals, with particular attention to Ethiopians following reports of isolated incidents affecting the community.
“Ethiopians are Ethiopians to us, and it is strictly prohibited to harm them,” the President emphasized.
His remarks come amid rising concerns over specific incidents involving Ethiopian citizens, prompting public unease. President Irro reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the rights of foreign nationals in line with international standards and Somaliland’s longstanding traditions of hospitality.
Highlighting regional cooperation, he stressed the importance of Somaliland’s historic ties with Ethiopia, describing the two peoples as interdependent and emphasizing Ethiopia’s role as a key trade partner and ally.
“This unique and historic relationship between Somaliland and Ethiopia has endured for decades,” President Irro said.
The statement is interpreted as a move to reassure the public, reduce social tensions, and reinforce Somaliland’s broader diplomatic engagement with Ethiopia.
