Hargeisa (Dawan Africa) – Somaliland police have arrested a social media influencer in Hargeisa after she allegedly hosted a celebration marking Galmudug’s anniversary and shared videos online displaying flags deemed contrary to the symbols and sovereignty of Somaliland.
In a statement on Thursday, the Somaliland Police Force said the suspect, identified as Qadan Abdillahi, was detained in a rapid operation after posting footage on social media showing her decorating her home with flags not recognised by Somaliland authorities.
“The police arrested the suspect after she disseminated videos on social media opposing the sovereignty of Somaliland, by displaying flags inconsistent with the nation’s symbols and honour,” the statement read.
Police said Qadan Abdillahi will be swiftly brought before the judiciary. The force also issued a stern warning to the public against engaging in actions they say undermine Somaliland’s existence and national unity.
The arrest has sparked discussions online, with supporters of Somaliland’s stance defending the move as an enforcement of sovereignty, while others raised concerns over freedom of expression and cultural representation.
