Somalia, 10 November 2025 – The Puntland State of Somalia has announced plans to hold a donor conference on 1st December to address ongoing drought affecting nearly one million people across the region.
The plan was announced on Monday during an emergency meeting chaired by Deputy President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, attended by Puntland ministries, humanitarian agencies, and international partners.
Lugatoor emphasized the importance of rapid action and close coordination to ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable communities.
According to state data released on Saturday, the drought—caused by four consecutive failed rainy seasons—has led to widespread food insecurity, severe water shortages, and displacement across Puntland’s regions. Around 310,000 children under five are reported to be suffering from malnutrition.
The meeting also announced plans to establish committee tasked with coordinating the drought response and ensuring urgent aid is delivered to affected populations.
Puntland’s initiative comes as the Federal Government of Somalia and several other regional states in Jowhar declared a nationwide drought emergency, following four consecutive failed rainy seasons.
