Somalia July 28, 2026 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met U.S. Representative Darin LaHood in Mogadishu on Tuesday for discussions focused on security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, trade and investment, according to Somalia’s presidency.
The meeting highlighted efforts to strengthen the longstanding partnership between Somalia and the United States, with discussions covering cooperation on peace and security, as well as continued efforts to counter Al-Shabaab, Villa Somalia said in a statement.
President Hassan Sheikh thanked the United States for its support and reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to improving security conditions, strengthening state institutions and creating an environment conducive to economic investment.

LaHood welcomed Somalia’s progress in rebuilding government institutions and advancing stability, according to the statement.
The U.S. lawmaker, a Republican representing Illinois, serves on the House Intelligence Committee and the Ways and Means Committee, which plays a key role in trade policy.
The visit comes as Somalia continues to seek stronger international partnerships in security, economic development and investment as part of broader efforts to strengthen national stability.
