Somalia, July 20 2026 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Monday, saying he looked forward to working with the new government to strengthen the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
In a post on X, Mohamud described the United Kingdom as "a valued partner in Somalia's state-building and development journey" and said he looked forward to deepening bilateral cooperation.
"Warm congratulations to the new PM of the UK and Leader of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham," Mohamud wrote.

Burnham became Britain's prime minister on Monday after succeeding Keir Starmer as leader of the governing Labour Party, pledging to tackle political instability, address the cost-of-living crisis and unveil a long-term plan for the country.
The United Kingdom is one of Somalia's longstanding international partners, supporting the country through humanitarian assistance, security cooperation and state-building programmes. London has also backed Somalia's efforts to strengthen its security institutions and governance as the country continues its fight against Al-Shabaab and pursues political and economic reforms.
