Somalia, April 10, 2026 Somalia’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Dahir Shire Mohamed said the country’s first oil exploration well, Curad-1, will be drilled offshore in Galmudug State , providing new details on the project’s location.
Speaking in an interview on Dawan Media’s “Miizaan Podcast” on Friday, he said the well is located in deep waters between the coastal towns of Mareeg and Harardhere.
“Curad-1 will be drilled in the waters of Galmudug, specifically between Mareeg and Harardhere,” he said.

He said the site lies about 275 kilometres offshore. “It is located far out at sea, approximately 275 km from the coast,” he added.
The announcement comes as Somalia prepares to begin its first offshore drilling operation following the arrival of the Turkish deep-sea drilling vessel Çağrı Bey in Mogadishu.
Officials say the project marks a significant step in Somalia’s efforts to explore and develop its offshore energy resources.
