Somalia, July 21 2026 – Somalia's National University graduated the first class from its Institute of Da'wah and Islamic Studies on Monday, a milestone university officials said marked the revival of the institution to train religious scholars and judicial professionals.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and senior government officials.
University President Mohamed Mahmoud Mohamed said 190 students graduated from the institute's first intake after completing programmes in Islamic outreach (Da'wah) and judiciary, out of 204 students admitted when the institute reopened in November 2023.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mohamed said the institute had admitted 222 students for its second intake after receiving about 600 applications, reflecting growing demand for the programmes.
Mohamed said the university expected the institute to produce more graduates to serve Somalia's religious institutions, judicial sector and broader public service.
The National University of Somalia, re-established by the federal government in 2014 after years of closure caused by conflict, has expanded its academic programmes in recent years as part of wider efforts to rebuild the country's higher education sector.
