Somalia, 5 January 2026 Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation has praised the December 25th Banadir local council elections, calling them a “historic” step forward for democracy in the country.
In a statement, the ministry described the successful elections as a demonstration of political maturity, broad public participation, and growing confidence in democratic processes.
“These elections are a symbol of the country’s democratic progress and the ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions, federalism, and good governance,” the ministry said, emphasizing their role in enhancing accountability and local governance.

The ministry also commended the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for conducting the polls “transparently and professionally,” and security agencies for maintaining law and order, allowing the process to conclude peacefully.
It further acknowledged international partners for supporting the electoral process and said the newly elected council will be responsible for improving public services, promoting accountability, and implementing development projects that directly affect residents’ daily lives.
