Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) on Tuesday claimed responsibility for a military operation in the Cumar Beere area of Lower Shabelle, saying it resulted in the killing of five Al-Shabaab members and the destruction of militant positions.
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the agency said the raid was conducted by its elite Gaashaan unit, describing it as a “planned mission” aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab's local presence. The statement referred to the group as “Khawaarij,” a term used by Somali authorities to characterize the insurgents.
“The special forces operation eliminated five militants and dismantled enemy positions in the area,” NISA said, adding that operations have intensified to prevent militant plots targeting Somali civilians.
No independent verification of the casualty figures or damage was provided.
Lower Shabelle remains one of the volatile regions in Somalia, with Al-Shabaab maintaining a presence in rural areas despite ongoing government-led offensives supported by local militias and international partners.
