Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Three former Somali presidents, Abdiqasim Salad Hassan, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, have issued an unprecedented joint statement on Tuesday accusing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of illegally reallocating public land in Mogadishu, calling the actions a violation of the Provisional Constitution.
The letter, posted on the social media pages of former presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo — and co-signed by former president Abdiqasim Salad Hassan, though not published on an official platform said the government’s land transfers were displacing vulnerable families, undermining citizens’ rights, and eroding public trust in state institutions. “We call onPresident Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to stop the abuse of public property and the oppression of the poor citizens he swore to serve,” the statement read.
They stressed that public land is a collective resource that must be managed transparently, with revenues directed to the national treasury, and warned that continued mismanagement could deepen social divisions, fuel corruption, and destabilize the political order.
The trio also cautioned businesses and the public against purchasing misappropriated property, labeling such transactions as illegitimate and risky. This joint intervention, the first by Somalia’s three living former presidents, highlights rising concerns over land disputes in Mogadishu and their potential impact on national stability.
