Somalia, 16 April 2026 – Local council and state assembly elections will be held May 13 in Galmudug and Hirshabelle and June 30 in North East State, the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) announced Thursday.
The commission's spokesperson, Abdifitah Faysal Hussein said preparations for the elections are in their final stages, with voter registration completed, identification cards distributed, polling stations designated, and temporary election staff trained.
Speaking at a press briefing in Mogadishu, Hussein said political parties have also selected candidates for local councils and state assemblies, adding that they must submit lists of polling agents. He said the election schedule for South West State remains unchanged.

NIEBC emphasized that the process is part of the second phase of local council polls, in line with the national electoral law.
The Commission called on the public to take part in the democratic process, urging political parties to finalize all election-related requirements.
