MOGADISHU (Dawan) – August 20, 2026 – Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has postponed the simultaneous elections for Hirshabelle State Parliament and local councils that were scheduled for August 20, 2026.
The commission said the postponement was made to allow the completion of outstanding electoral preparations, including ongoing voter registration activities in four districts of Hiran region.
The commission also said political parties would be given additional time to continue their preparations and complete the submission of candidate lists for the elections.

The elections were initially scheduled for August 20, 2026. However, the commission said a new election timetable and date would be announced within two weeks.
NIEBC said the decision is part of efforts to ensure that the electoral process is conducted in a transparent, free and credible manner in line with Somalia’s election laws.
