MOGADISHU, September 26, 2026 Somalia’s disaster management agency and the United Nations World Food Programme have signed a five-year agreement to strengthen preparedness for disasters, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.
The agreement was signed by Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) chairperson Mohamud Moallim Abdulle and WFP’s representative in Somalia, Hameed Nuru.
The agency said the partnership would focus on forecasting risks, improving early warning, acting before disasters escalate and responding to emergencies. It also covers food security and support for communities affected by disasters.

The agreement comes as WFP and the Somali government warn that 5.4 million people could face crisis levels of hunger or worse between October and December. SoDMA estimates that 2.5 million to 3.5 million people could be exposed to flooding during that period. Those figures describe the wider humanitarian risk, rather than the number of people covered by the new agreement.
Nuru said the agreement would help strengthen Somalia’s ability to respond to humanitarian emergencies and climate-related threats. Abdulle said early warning and early action would be priorities.
