Somalia, 8 January 2026 The University of Somalia and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources have signed a cooperation agreement focusing on research, training, and development of Somali manpower in the extraction industry.
The agreement aims at advancing the country’s natural resources, particularly oil and minerals, with the University of Somalia contributing to research, training, and the development of Somali personnel to play an active role in the upcoming oil exploration activities set to begin soon in Somalia.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday by Prof. Dr. Mahamed Mahamud Mahamed, the Rector of the University of Somalia, and Mr. Mahamed Hashi Carabey, the Director General of the Ministry of Petroleum. The deal also emphasizes the university’s role in training and educating Somali students who will be part of the future workforce in the oil industry. The University is expected to provide professional training and capacity-building programs for graduates to help them participate in the country’s resource development.

Somalia is expected to start oil exploration activities in February this year, with the arrival of the Çağrı Bey, an oil exploration vessel that will dock on Somalia’s coastline.
