Somalia July 26 2026 – Somalia and Türkiye have launched joint technical committees to expand investment and technical cooperation in fisheries and the blue economy in the sector, Somalia's Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy said.
The committees were announced following talks in Mogadishu between Somalia's Fisheries and Blue Economy Minister Ahmed Hassan Aden and a Turkish delegation led by Turgay Türkyılmaz, director general at Türkiye's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
The discussions focused on fisheries management, scientific research, investment and industrial development, including fish processing, cold storage, export infrastructure and other projects intended to increase the value of Somalia's marine resources, the ministry said.
Speaking after the meeting, Aden said the initiative would encourage partnerships between Somali and Turkish businesses, including joint ventures in fish processing, fishing fleets and seafood marketing.

"Our goal is to create investment opportunities that benefit both countries while generating jobs and supporting Somalia's economic growth," he said, according to remarks released by the ministry.
The ministry said the two sides also discussed implementing Somalia's 2023 Fisheries Management and Development Law, improving fish stock assessments and addressing gaps in scientific data to support sustainable management of the country's fisheries.
The latest initiative builds on the launch earlier this year of SOMTURK, a joint fisheries company established by Somalia's state-owned fishing company and Türkiye's OYAK Group to support fisheries development and licensing services.
Somalia has one of Africa's longest coastlines and has identified fisheries as a priority sector for attracting investment and diversifying the economy. The government has increasingly sought foreign investment and technical partnerships to develop its blue economy and expand seafood production and exports.
