Mogadishu, 7 September 2026 Somalia's Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism is preparing guidelines to regulate social media use and activities promoting the country's tourism sector, Minister Abdulfatah Qasim Mohamud said at the Media Relations Strategy Forum on Monday.The minister said social media platforms are modern tools with many benefits when used properly, but can also have negative impacts when used in ways that conflict with culture, security and the interests of society.
Mohamud said the government aims to promote responsible use of digital media, increase awareness among young people and establish a framework to guide the future of modern media.
He said the ministry will issue guidelines for institutions and individuals working in tourism, particularly those producing videos and information about Somalia, to ensure published content aligns with the country's culture and national interests.
"Protecting culture, the beauty of the country and presenting a positive image of Somalia are part of national security," the minister said.

He said tourism is not limited only to business, but is also linked to security and the country's reputation, making it necessary to have a system that guides activities related to promoting tourism.
The minister said a preliminary draft of the guidelines has been prepared and is expected to be presented in coming days, while broader tourism policies and regulations are also b2eing developed.
The Media Relations Strategy Forum is discussing the role of media, public relations and challenges facing modern communication in Somalia.
