Somalia, 9 June 2026 – Somalia’s Sports Ministry expressed regret over Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan’s withdrawal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Ministry stated that after learning of the entry challenges Artan faced, it coordinated with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Office of the President to negotiate with the United States Government and FIFA.
Unfortunately, the efforts were unable to resolve the matter in time, the ministry added.

The ministry reiterated its support for Artan, pledging to continue backing his professional development and participation in future international tournaments.
Referee Artan became prominent in Somalia after winning CAF Referee at the Year at the Confederation of Africa Football awards in Morocco last year.
The Somali government thanked the public and the sports community for their solidarity and encouragement for Artan.
