Egypt, July 23 2026 – Somalia has formally asked for a greater share of senior positions at the Arab League Secretariat, including leadership roles in its permanent missions, in talks between its ambassador to Egypt and the Arab League's secretary-general, the Somali embassy in Cairo said on Thursday.
According to the embassy, Somalia's ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Aware, met Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy in Cairo to discuss strengthening cooperation between Somalia and the 22-member regional organization.
During the meeting, Somalia formally requested that it be allocated its share of senior positions within the Arab League Secretariat, particularly leadership posts in permanent missions and other high-level appointments, the embassy said.

The embassy said Fahmy reaffirmed the Arab League's continued support for Somalia and indicated that the organization's General Secretariat would consider the requests submitted by the Somali side as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation.
Aware conveyed also congratulations from Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Fahmy on assuming office earlier this month and expressed Somalia's commitment to expanding cooperation with the Arab League, the embassy said.
The ambassador also briefed the secretary-general on political and security developments in Somalia and the government's efforts to deepen engagement with the Arab League in support of shared Arab interests, according to the statement.
