Somalia, 28 July 2026 — External financial assistance to Somalia declined by 25% over 2024 and 2025, with the drop accelerating each year, Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh said Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening of the 4th Economic Policy Conference of the Central Bank of Somalia, Egeh said the back-to-back decline was the first of its kind and warned Somalia must urgently reduce its reliance on donors.
“Over the two consecutive years of 2024 and 2025, the assistance coming into Somalia declined by 25%. It declined for the first time, and the decline is increasing year after year. It is essential that we move away from dependence on aid,” Egeh said.

The conference, officially opened in Mogadishu today, brought together economists, researchers, financial institutions and development partners to discuss financial stability, risk management and strengthening financial infrastructure in light of the funding squeeze.
Egeh stressed the need to strengthen domestic economic capacity and internal revenue sources to offset the aid shortfall and build long-term stability.
This is the fourth edition of the conference. The previous edition focused on Somalia’s economic growth following debt relief.
