Mogadishu, 12 September 2025 – Somalia has received new anti-terrorism equipment from the British government as the fight against terrorism in the Horn of Africa country intensifies.
The Counter Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) were donated on Thursday during a handover ceremony attended by Somalia’s Defence Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Chief of Defence Forces, General Odowaa Yusuf Raage, and British Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King.
Minister Fiqi said the new equipment would significantly boost the capacity and safety of Somali Security Forces (SSF) during military operations.
“Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) remain the main weapon used by Al-Shabaab and ISIS, and they are a major threat to our soldiers and civilians.”
“This new equipment, along with training and support, will prepare our counter-IED teams to detect and effectively respond to these threats,” he added.
The Minister noted the donation was a demonstration of United Kingdom's continued support to Somalia’s efforts in combating extremist groups.
Somalia’s Defence Ministry highlighted the support will enhance the technical capacity of the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), reduce risks to both soldiers and civilians, while building public confidence in the country’s ability to counter Al-Shabaab and ISIS.
The UK Embassy, in a posting on X, said the donation was part of efforts to strengthen the capacity of Somalia's security forces to effectively deal with terrorism and other security-related threats.
