U.S.A., 23 September 2025 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended a Summit meeting on Monday convened ahead of the annual UN General Assembly where leaders across the globe reaffirmed their support for Palestinian statehood, renewing efforts to revive the stalled two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, in New York, followed a UN General Assembly resolution endorsing the outcome declaration from the first phase of the process in July.
According to Villa Somalia, the Federal Government “reaffirmed its consistent stance of standing with the people and the State of Palestine,” noting that Somalia was among the first countries to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Villa Somalia added that Somalia “encourages countries that have taken the historic decision to recognize the State of Palestine,” adding that the move would strengthen peace and stability in the Middle East while confirming the rights of the Palestinian people.
Somalia formally recognized the State of Palestine in 1988, shortly after the Palestine National Council declared independence in Algiers on 15 November, the same year.
According to official figures , more than 140 of the 193 United Nations member states have recognized the State of Palestine, with over 142 nations now pledging recognition.
Recently, France, Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal broke ranks with their key ally, the United States in recognizing the Palestinian statehood, following the worsening humanitarian situation in Palestinian territories caused by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
