Laftagareen stepped down at the end of March 2026 following a political dispute with the federal government. In June, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur (Aden Madobe) was elected president of the Southwest administration, but Laftagareen rejected the leadership change and continues to claim he is president of South West State.
The dispute has led to several armed clashes in Baidoa between forces loyal to Laftagareen and troops aligned with the federal government and the new South West State administration.
The federal government and the South West State administration have previously accused forces loyal to Laftagareen of cooperating with Al-Shabaab, allegations denied by Laftagareen's side.
