Somalia 17, September 2025 – Somalia has announced significant progress in improving the quality and capacity of its fish exports.
In an interview with Somali National Television (SNTV), aired on Tuesday night, Somalia's Fisheries Minister Ahmed Hassan Aden stated that national standards have been established to ensure Somali fish meet international quality requirements.
“The other challenge that hindered exports was the lack of quality control for the fish. This issue has been resolved with the establishment of the Somali Fish Quality Agency,” the minister said.
He added that training and preparation for staff involved in fish quality management have reached a high standard, resulting in regulations for fish quality and types of fish to be produced.
Somalia has also fostered close relationships with companies owned by Somali nationals to ensure the quality of the fish.
“Today, Somali traders are capable of exporting fish confidently, as we have prepared standards that meet international expectations,” Minister Ahmed Hassan Aden stated.
He emphasized that Somali traders have remained resilient even during periods of collapse and state absence, exporting fish to countries such as Jordan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, China, and other nations.
The ministry is expected to strengthen Somalia's fishing sector, increase international trade, and support livelihoods of Somali traders working in the fishing industry.
