Somalia, 16 December 2025- Somalia’s key opposition group, Salvation Platform Forum, yesterday challenged the government to come clean on the source of funds for the Banaadir local council elections scheduled for 25 December.
The group made the demands at a night meeting in Mogadishu convened to discuss the political situation in the country and the upcoming Banaadir elections.
The leaders questioned the costs of the elections, noting that the budget for the exercise was not included in the 2025 budget estimates.
Member of Parliament Abdishakur Warsame accused the federal government of failing the transparency test on election funding and expenditure.
Warsame, has alleged that the planed Banaadir elections was shrouded in mystery terming it a ‘money laundering’ scheme for some powerful politicians.
"When I conducted a thorough investigation, I asked myself ‘how is this being done?’ I concluded that the entire electoral process is a money laundering scheme," he said.

The MP however did not provide evidence neither did he state when the investigations were done.
He further alleged that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was one of the primary beneficiaries of the ‘election financing scandal’.
"The election commission comes to him (President Hassan Sheikh) asking for money, and he gives it to them but benefits more," Abdirahman said.
The legislator again failed to back up his controversial claims against the President.
Warsame has been one of the staunchest critics of President Hassan Sheikh and his administration.
